Stage One: The Story Often Exists Before the Script
Which story is worth the bet has already been settled by somebody before anyone calls "action" on a short drama set. Track a few hits backward and you often discover a book at the start of the pipeline. The novel Shutout by Jami Davenport is the basis for ReelShort's Breaking the Ice, a 2024 hockey romance centered on a secret child. A novel by Cora Reilly is the basis of Bound by Honor, which ReelShort debuted on November reel shorts free 1, 2025, as a mafia arranged-marriage series. Korea's 2026 office romance Quiet in the Office!, which has a 19+ age rating, is adapted from a web novel and webtoon. Source material sits close at hand because a number of app owners also operate reading businesses: Holywater operates the books app My Passion, Crazy Maple Studio makes the interactive-story app Chapters, and GoodShort's Google Play developer name is GoodNovel. When no book exists, writers turn to reliable tropes such as billionaire romance, revenge, identity reveals and family drama. A script has one job: to condense a long drama story into scenes that each deliver a reveal, a reversal or a threat within seconds.
Stage Two: Familiar Faces in the Cast
The format's economics become visible on screen through casting. On IMDb, the cast lists for short series keep repeating the same names. Noah Fearnley returned in 2025 for Love on the Sidelines, a second-chance story about a former football star, after leading ReelShort's werewolf romance Fated to the Alpha in 2024. Rosa Singerman fronted both Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter and Kidnapped by the Mafia on GoodShort in 2025, starring opposite Franky Cammarata in the second. Since a series has only a handful of free episodes to win you over, it matters a great deal that a lead with a following on one app comes to the next title with a head start. TheWrap reported in October 2024 that about 75 percent of ReelShort's users were women, so producers are also casting with a specific viewer in mind. DramaBox runs a production team in Los Angeles.
Stage Three: Filming Seventy Episodes in About Eight Days
According to TheWrap, a Western short drama usually costs $150,000 to $300,000 per series and is shot in eight to ten days. Wikipedia's overview of the format is much the same, placing $150,000 to $250,000 on a seven- to ten-day shoot for 50 to 70 or more episodes. A 70-episode series shot in eight days works out to close to nine episodes' worth of material every working day, if you do the arithmetic. Chinese producers selling abroad have reported slimmer numbers still. Jiuzhou Culture put a 70-episode series at $100,000 to $150,000 in China Daily reporting from January 2024. That translates to roughly $1,400 to $2,100 per finished episode. Jiuzhou also stated about 80 percent of the more than 600 titles it had produced for overseas markets were dubbed Chinese adaptations, while 20 percent were original overseas productions. Dubbing lets a studio repurpose a finished domestic series, so the expensive shoot happens only once.
Stage Four: Trimming to 60–100 Seconds
In the edit suite, episodes of 60 to 100 seconds are carved from the footage and framed vertically at 9:16 for a phone. At that length an episode has room for a turn or two of plot, so each one is designed around a question the next episode promises to answer. The mechanism that moves you from one installment to the next is the cliffhanger, and it is the house style. Stack those fragments together and a 70-episode series adds up to roughly 70 to 117 minutes of screen time. Episode counts vary a great deal by title, and GoodShort's official pages list 30 episodes for My Stolen Crown: I Am the Dragon Queen and 100 for The Dragon King's Return. ReelShort also runs official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion, so the same footage can reach viewers who never open the app. Put simply, editors are cutting video dramas for several screens at once.
Stage Five: Deciding Where the Paywall Falls
The final creative decision is also a commercial one. Free viewing covers the first eight to ten episodes in the standard model TheWrap outlines. ReelShort's own blog places its free run at usually five to 15 episodes, and TheWrap counted the first eight in 2024. After that, episodes are unlocked with coins, and ReelShort's blog gives the standard cost of an episode as about 60 coins. You can also buy a weekly VIP pass that costs about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 and auto-renews, or earn coins by watching ads, with one ad unlocking two premium episodes according to the same blog. Since prices differ by platform, country and promotion, your store may display something different. Placement is where the controversy lies: among the most common complaints about these apps are paywalls falling right on a cliffhanger, along with auto-renewing weekly passes and rising coin costs. Any coin generator or modded "unlimited coins" app promising a way around the wall is unofficial and best avoided.
Stage Six: AI-Generated Series and Animation
In the newest production stage, the camera disappears entirely. Animated motion comics now appear alongside ReelShort's live-action catalogue. A 58-episode family saga, The Lost Heir centers on Arthur Lancaster, who loses his memory saving his brother, grows up on a farm as "Johnny" and in the end unmasks the foster sister who kept framing him. Shattered Vows, a 52-episode ReelShort title from 2026, is an AI-generated animated motion comic about heiress Vanessa Windsor pursuing revenge on the husband and best friend who helped her sister's killer escape, and it lists no cast. Do not mix it up with a separate 58-episode ShortMax series that shares the name. No app has gone further than DramaWave: 36Kr reported that more than 80 percent of its newly released content is AI-generated and that the app's annualized revenue topped $700 million by the second quarter of 2026. AI video dramas have also spread beyond the apps: Fruit Love Island, an AI-made parody of Love Island starring fruit contestants, showed as much on TikTok in March 2026 before critics widely branded it "AI slop".
Stage Seven: A Hollywood Studio Joins the Production Line
The clearest example of traditional studios taking notice is Fox Entertainment. Holywater, the Kyiv-founded company behind the My Drama app, took on an equity investment from Fox in October 2025. Billionaire Blackmail, Bound by Obsession and My Heart's Offside are among the Fox-produced series already on the app, and Fox has also pledged to produce more than 200 vertical titles over two years. Holywater brought in a further $22 million in January 2026 in a round led by Horizon Capital, and My Drama won the 2025 Webby Award for Best Streaming Service. A network-scale producer committing to that volume suggests the eight-day shoot has gone from curiosity to line item.
The Production Line at a Glance
Set the stages side by side and the logic of the business snaps into focus. The fixed, expensive block is the shoot, and much of the rest is built around it. Casting leans on known faces, scripts tend to arrive pre-tested as novels or familiar tropes, and the edit is built around cliffhangers that lead into a paywall. Fans searching for a "reel short drama" usually have ReelShort titles in mind, yet TheWrap and Wikipedia describe broadly similar methods across the category. The table below relies only on publicly reported figures to summarize typical time and cost at each stage. It says so rather than guessing whenever no reliable figure has been published.
| Stage of production | Typical time / cost | What goes on |
|---|---|---|
| Script and source material | No published figure | A novel, web fiction or proven trope is adapted; Breaking the Ice comes from Shutout, Bound by Honor from Cora Reilly's novel |
| Casting | No public figure | Leads are picked, often actors with earlier short-drama credits; animated titles skip this stage |
| The shoot | 7–10 days; $150K–250K (Wikipedia) or $150K–300K per series (TheWrap); $100K–150K per 70 episodes (Jiuzhou) | 50 to 70+ episodes are shot for a vertical frame |
| Editing | Episodes lasting 60–100 seconds | Footage is cut into installments that each end on a cliffhanger |
| Release and the paywall | First 8–10 episodes free (TheWrap); on ReelShort, about 60 coins per later episode | Episodes are unlocked with coins, ads or a weekly pass of about $19.99 in the US App Store as of September 2026 |
| AI and animation | Costs not disclosed | Motion comics such as The Lost Heir and Shattered Vows; over 80 percent of DramaWave's new releases AI-generated |
